Child and family violence is one of the most serious problems affecting the social, economic, and educational well-being of communities in Nicaragua. In 2007, 70,000 Nicaraguan women filed formal reports of physical, psychological, or sexual abuse, which represents an increase of 36% over the 2006 statistics.
To confront the deeply ingrained culture of abuse/mistreatment widely regarded as normal, the Nehemiah Center has initiated a Promoting Healthy Relationships Project (2008-2009) to address to promote positive values and behaviors (such as respect, recognition, communication, support) and reduce abuse/violence within the family.
Through a series of trainings in churches throughout Leon and Chinandega, leaders are being equipped to respond to this issue and engage their members in the promotion of just, healthy, and peaceful relationships in their communities.
